At a campaign rally for New York City’s upcoming mayoral election, Independent candidate and former Governor Andrew Cuomo strongly criticized opponent Zohran Mamdani’s stance in favor of legalizing prostitution, calling it anti-Islamic.
Speakers at the event said that Islam never allows prostitution under any circumstances, and therefore, Mamdani’s position goes against the teachings of the faith. They added that New York City’s religious harmony — where Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and Buddhists live together with equal rights — must not be destroyed by divisive rhetoric.
Speakers further warned that if Mamdani were elected, he would support both same-sex relationships and prostitution, both of which are forbidden in Islam. As the election approaches, they said, religiously observant Muslim voters are turning away from him.
The rally took place on October 19 at the Gujarati Samaj Party Hall in Fresh Meadows, New York. The event was presided over by Anil Varsar, with the participation of former Governor Andrew Cuomo, Dr. Dilip Nath (Democratic District Leader), Fahad Solaiman (Community Board Member), Haris Patel, Faisal Aziz, Amzad Hossain Selim, Md. Parvez, and several leaders of the Gujarati community.
During his speech, Andrew Cuomo shared his past experiences in government and outlined his vision for the city. He said,
“New York City is currently suffering from disorder across many sectors — public safety, education, housing, and mental health. If elected, I will restore discipline and stability in every area.”
He added,
“To fix the city’s public school system, I will reinstate mayoral control, double the number of Gifted and Talented programs and specialized high schools, and ensure quality education for all.
”Highlighting his plans for the South Asian community, Cuomo said,
“For economic growth and law enforcement stability, I ask for your support. If I’m elected, South Asians — including Bangladeshis — will hold key positions in my administration.”
Fahad Solaiman remarked,“Zohran Mamdani has been a State Assemblyman for four years but never once identified himself as a Muslim. Now, suddenly, he’s trying to use religion to attract votes from the community.
”The New York City mayoral election is scheduled to take place on November 4, with Andrew Cuomo running as an independent candidate.
Dr. Dilip Nath said,“If Andrew Cuomo becomes mayor, we can build a more civilized, safe, and prosperous New York for all citizens.”

অন্যান্য বক্তারা বলেন, নিউইয়র্ক সিটিতে হিন্দু, মুসলিম, খ্রিস্টান ও বৌদ্ধরা সমান অধিকার নিয়ে বসবাস করছে। ধর্মীয় এই সম্প্রীতির ধারা কোন ভাবেই ধংস হতে দেয়া যাবে না। জোহরান মামদানি তার বক্তব্যে ধর্মীয় বিভেদ সৃষ্টি করছেন।
বক্তারা বলেন, জোহরান মামদানি নির্বাচিত হলে সমকামী ও পতিতা ব্যবসাকে সমর্থন করবেন,অথচ পবিত্র ইসলাম ধর্ম যা কোনক্রমেই অনুমোদন করে না। তাই নির্বাচনের সময় যতই এগিয়ে আসছে, ততোই জোহরান মামদানির প্রতি ধর্মপ্রাণ মুসলামানদের সমর্থন কমে আসছে।
গত ১৯ অক্টোবর নিউইয়র্কের ফ্রেসমেডোর গুজরাটি সমাজ পার্টি হলে এই প্রচারণা সভা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।
অনীল ভার্সার সভাপতিত্বে সভায় সাবেক গভর্ণর এন্ড্রু কুমোর ছাড়াও বক্তব্য করেন ডেমোক্রেটিক পার্টির ডিস্ট্রিক্ট লিডার ড. দিলীপ নাথ, কমিউনিটি বোর্ড সদস্য ফাহাদ সোলায়মান, হারিস প্যাটেল,ফয়সল আজিজ, আমজাদ হোসেন সেলিম,মোঃ পারভেজসহ গুজরাটি কমিউনিটির নেতৃবৃন্দ।
সভায় মেয়র প্রার্থী ও সাবেক গভর্নর অ্যান্ড্রু ক্যুমো তাঁর অতীত অভিজ্ঞতা, মেয়র হিসেবে বিভিন্ন পরিকল্না ও বাস্তবায়নের প্রক্রিয়া তুলে ধরে ধরে বলেন, বর্তমানে নিউইয়র্ক সিটি আজ নানা সমস্যায় জর্জরিত। জননিরাপত্তা, শিক্ষা, বাসস্থান, মানসিক স্বাস্থ্যসহ সকল ক্ষেত্রেই নিশৃঙ্খলা বিরাজ করছে, তাই আমি নির্বাচিত হলে সব বিষয়ে শৃঙ্খলা ফিরিয়ে আনব।
তিনি জানান, নিউইয়র্কের পাবলিক স্কুল ব্যবস্থা ঠিক করতে আমি মেয়রাল কল্ট্রোল পুনর্বহাল করব। বিশেষ মেধাবী শিক্ষার্থীদের ‘গিফটেড আ্যান্ড ট্যালেন্টেড প্রোগ্রাম’ ও বিশেষায়িত হাই স্কুলের সংখ্যা দ্বিগুণ করার প্রতিশ্রুতি দিচ্ছি।
তিনি সাউথ এশিয়ানদের প্রতি তার নির্বাচনী ইসতেহার তুলে ধরে বলেন,শহরের অর্থনীতি ও আইন শৃঙ্খলা রক্ষায় স্থিতিশীল নেতৃত্বের জন্যে আমাকে সমর্থন দিন। তিনি বলেন, আমি নির্বাচিত হলে আমার প্রশাসনে সাউথ এশিয়ান ব্যক্তিবর্গ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ দায়িত্ব পাবেন, এর মধ্যে বাংলাদেশীরাও থাকবেন।
ডেমোক্রেটিক পার্টির ডিস্ট্রিক্ট লিডার ড. দিলীপ নাথ বলেন, অ্যান্ড্রু ক্যুমো মেয়র হলে নিউইয়র্কে আমরা নাগরিকদের জন্য একটি সভ্য ও সমৃদ্ধ শহর হিসেবে গড়ে তুলতে পারবো।
ফাহাদ সোলায়মান বলেন, জোহরান মামদানি চার বছর ধরে স্টেট অ্যাসেম্বলিম্যান হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করলেও নিজেকে মুসলমান হিসেবে কখনো তুলে ধরেননি, এখন কেবল ভোটের জন্য কমিউনিটিকে কাছে টানার চেষ্টা করছেন।
আগামী ৪ নভেম্বর অনুষ্ঠিতব্য নিউ ইয়র্ক সিটির আসন্ন মেয়র নির্বাচনে সাবেক গভর্ণর এন্ড্রু কুমোর স্বতন্ত্র প্রার্থী হিসেবে নির্বাচন করছেন।
